RealText Privacy Policy

RealText is a plain-text, Markdown, CSV and TSV editor for the Mac,
made by moose3d. This policy covers RealText from the Mac App Store,
any copy of RealText downloaded from this website, and Bash Mode,
the Terminal editor that comes inside RealText.


The short version

RealText collects no data.
It has no network code, so it can't send anything anywhere.
There are no accounts, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking.


Your files

RealText opens only the files you choose,
and saves them only where you save them.
Your documents never leave your Mac through RealText.

The Mac App Store version runs in Apple's App Sandbox.
It can reach only the files you open or save with it.
It has no network access, so macOS itself would block a connection.

Bash Mode runs only when you start it yourself in Terminal.
It opens and saves only the files you name or pick in it,
and makes a folder only when you ask it to.
Besides those, it writes only its own settings file
and short-lived temporary files that it deletes.


What stays on your Mac

RealText remembers a few preferences, such as how rows and columns are labeled,
in its normal preferences file on your Mac. macOS keeps the Open Recent list.
Bash Mode keeps its label settings
in a small file named .rltextrc in your home folder.

The Help window for Terminal and Recovery shows your Mac's name,
the name of the disk RealText is on, and today's date, so it can print
instructions for your Mac. This stays on screen; nothing is sent anywhere.

The Privacy Policy item in the Help menu opens this page in your web browser.
Your browser and this website's host handle that visit
under their own policies; RealText isn't involved.
These pages use no cookies, scripts, analytics or outside resources.


No collection, no sharing

We don't collect, store, sell or share any personal information,
usage data, diagnostics or identifiers.
We have no server that could receive them.


Apple

If you download RealText from the Mac App Store, Apple handles the download
under Apple's own privacy policy. If you choose to share crash reports
or usage data with app developers in macOS settings, Apple collects
and delivers those reports; RealText adds nothing to them.


Children

RealText collects no information from anyone, including children under 13.


Changes

If this policy ever changes, the new version will be posted on this page
with a new effective date. A change that adds any data collection would also
be announced in the app's release notes before it takes effect.
